"Radiation Sterilization Effects on Medical Device Polymers"

Abstract:

Radiation sterilization accounts for 45% of the medical device sterilization market. Gamma, e-beam and x-ray radiation sterilization processing facilities are described. The fundamental physical and chemical interactions with polymeric materials for all
three modalities are reviewed, along with their practical differences with respect to affecting device performance. Guidelines for material compatibility of common classes of device materials with radiation sterilization are presented. Results from aging models that predict long-term device performance after radiation sterilization are compared with data.
