Abstract:

To help meet the goal of eliminating suffering and death due to cancer, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, is engaged in efforts to harness the power of nanotechnology to radically change the way we diagnose, treat and prevent cancer.  The NCI Alliance for Nanotechnology in Cancer is a comprehensive, systematized initiative encompassing the public and private sectors, designed to accelerate the application of the best capabilities of nanotechnology to cancer.  Currently, scientists are limited in their ability to turn promising molecular discoveries into benefits for cancer patients.  Nanotechnology can provide the technical power and tools that will enable those developing new diagnostics, therapeutics, and preventives to keep pace with today’s explosion in knowledge.  Technologies contributing to these technical advancements include carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, imaging agents, targeting ligands, therapeutics, etc. often combined in a multi-functional targeted device designed to diagnose and deliver multiple therapeutics directly to cancer cells.  Polymer materials and polymer chemistry are often integral to the development of these devices.  This presentation will focus on recent advances in nanotechnology for cancer across the Alliance where polymers play a critical role.

Speaker Background:

Dr. Linda Molnar currently serves as a Project Officer in the Office of Technology and Industrial Relations (OTIR) in the Office of the Director at the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  In her role, she supports the management of grants and contracts for nanotechnology applications in cancer research with particular emphasis on the Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNEs).  She has a breadth of experience in collaborations and partnerships between academic institutions, large companies and biotechnology start-ups for the successful translation of fundamental research into applications and products.

Her background includes the research and development of nanotechnology in a variety of applications and employments including Rohm and Haas Company, Caliper Technologies, the NASA Ames Research Center, and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).  She received her Ph. D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.   Dr. Molnar’s educational and professional background also includes pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, and business (Wharton).  She joined OTIR as a consultant in July 2005.
