Job Description
Western Digital, the premiere producer of storage solutions including hard disk drives (WD and G-Technology brands) and solid-state drives (SanDisk brand), is seeking a chemist with expertise in gas and liquid chromatography, as well as experience with analysis and properties of polymer materials and adhesives. Hard disk drives (HDDs) require rigorous levels of cleanliness and specific materials properties for their components, in order to maintain reliable performance over many years of operation in a variety of environments.

The position requires chromatography method development and analysis for trace level chemicals and material contaminants, including hands-on sample preparation, instrument operation and troubleshooting, data analysis, and professional report writing.
Polymer and adhesives knowledge will be used to help select appropriate materials for intended HDD use and in understanding root cause for HDD failures.
Collaboration with other lab personnel to combine results from multiple tests (e.g., NMR, FTIR, Raman, TOF-SIMS, etc.) into an overall understanding is expected.
Verbal presentations and explanation of results to development scientists and engineers are essential components of the position.
Regular sharing of technical skills and method transfers to global development and factory laboratory personnel will be needed.

BS (minimum), MS or PhD (preferred) in Analytical, Organic, or Polymer Chemistry
5+ years experience in GC-MS and/or LC-MS
Strong problem-solving abilities and desire to work in a multi-cultural team environment
