Polymeric Organic Light Emitting Diodes
Polymeric Organic Light Emitting Diodes (P-OLEDs)
Dr. Ilesh Bidd
Vice President, Research and Intellectual Property
Cambridge Display Technologies
Rapid progress in the development of P-OLED materials, displays and applications has brought this technology closer to commercialisation. This work focuses on the challenges faced in decreasing the power consumption of PLED devices by increasing the efficiency of electron injection; the talk highlights the progress made and provides insights into degradation, together with changes to materials that have been necessary to overcome technical hurdles.
Dr. Ilesh Bidd leads CDT’s R & D programmes, managed from the company’s Research Centre in Cambridge, and Intellectual Property Group based in Cambourne, near Cambridge. Prior to joining CDT in January 2009, he was the Vice President, Research & Technology at Fujifilm Imaging Colorants Ltd. (FFIC) since its formation in February 2006. FFIC is a recognised leader in the development and production of ink jet printing colorants and systems, both for desk top and commercial applications.
After graduating from Bristol University in 1984 with a PhD. degree in organic chemistry, Ilesh subsequently gained post-doctoral research experience as a Royal Society research fellow at the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France, where his focus was on the design and synthesis of macrocylic ligands for coordination and electron transfer studies.
Ilesh joined ICI Colours & Fine Chemicals business as a Research Chemist, in 1987, and was initially involved with Additives research (textiles and paint & plastics). He went on to hold a series of senior research posts in Zeneca Specialties, including the role of product development and technical service for the Biocides business. His most senior role within Zeneca Specialties was as Industrial Colours Research manager which he held from July 1995 to June 1999. In July 1999, he was appointed Head of Research & Development for Ink Jet Printing Materials and a member of the Ink Jet Business Board, on the formation of Avecia.
