Strategies for Controlling Block Copolymer Orientation to Access Well-defined Nanostructures (Schmidt, IBM Research)

Description:

“Strategies for Controlling Block Copolymer Orientation to Access Well-defined Nanostructures”

Abstract

Orientation control of thin film nanostructures derived from block copolymers (BCPs) are of great interest for various emerging technologies like separation membranes, nanopatterning, and energy storage and directed self-assembly (DSA) of BCPs is a promising candidate for extending the patterning capability of conventional lithography. While many BCP compositions have been developed for these applications, perpendicular orientation of these BCP domains is still very challenging to achieve.
In this talk, I will show new approaches to enable perpendicular orientation of high- BCPs using a coat and a short thermal annealing step. The development and performance of these approaches will be discussed. Specifically, I will show thin-film characterization on a wide range of substrates, discuss the mechanism of the orientation control and corroborate the experimental results with Monte Carlo simulation insights. Finally, the DSA, etch and pattern transfer of these BCPs will be highlighted.

Speaker Background

Kristin Schmidt is a Research Staff Member of IBM Research. Her research interests cover the discovery of new polymeric materials for advanced application in energy and information storage and sensing devices. She received her Ph.D. in polymer physics at the University of Bayreuth under the supervision of Prof. G. Krausch and Prof. A. Böker and her work was recognized with a Humboldt fellowship which she used to join the group of Prof. E. Kramer at UCSB as a post-doctoral scientist. Prior to IBM, she was managing a research group in the construction chemicals department at BASF, and worked as a scientist on organic photovoltaics at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Kristin has co-authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and holds several international patents.
