Application Opportunities by Engineering the Properties of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)

The presentation will provide an overview of research and development work at Polteco Inc. to engineer the properties of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) for specific biomedical and industrial applications requiring light weight and high mechanical performance. Challenging aspects in designing processing methodologies to produce required properties, to understand the morphology and property relationships of UHMWPE, and to ensure process control and reliability of properties will be discussed in relation to particular UHMWPE products.

Speakers Background:

Dr. Zachariades is the president of Polteco Inc., a research and development company established in 1985. Over his career of 40-plus years, he has directed research and development work for the commercialization of novel biomedical and industrial polymer products. Dr. Zachariades’ expertise is in engineering the properties of polymers through material development and novel processing techniques. He is the co-editor of two books on high modulus and high strength polymers, and has written over 80 technical papers, book chapters, reviews, and patents.

Dr. Zachariades received his B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Aston in Birmingham, UK and his Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from the State University of New York, Syracuse.
