Abstract
Join us for a joint GGPF/SPE Golden Gate Section webinar that dives into two real-world plastics failure analysis case studies. Key testing methods will be explored, including fractographic examination through visual inspection, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in addition to analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and molecular weight assessment. The case studies will showcase the methodology used to pinpoint the nature and cause of plastic component failures and provide practical insights into test selection and data interpretation.
Speaker Background
Jeffrey A. Jansen is the Engineering Manager and a Partner at The Madison Group, an independent plastics engineering and consulting firm. Jeff is a proven plastic professional with more than 30 years of experience solving problems and addressing opportunities related to polymeric materials, having performed over 5,000 investigations. He specializes in failure analysis, material identification and selection, as well as compatibility, aging, and lifetime prediction studies for thermoplastic materials. Jeff enjoys sharing his plastics knowledge and is a regular presenter on the SPE webinar series, covering a wide range of topics related to plastics failure, material performance, testing, and polymer technology. Jeff is a graduate of Carroll College and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and he was elected as a Fellow of the Society by the Society of Plastics Engineers.
