The GOLDEN GATE POLYMER FORUM

Dinner Lecture

Monday August 11
Michael's Restaurant
Mountain View

Tom McCarthy
Professor and Head
Polymer Science and Engineering Department
University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"Chemical and Topographical Control of Surface Properties"

The preparation of ultrahydrophobic, ultralyophobic and ultrahydrophilic surfaces
using several techniques will be described. These are surfaces that droplets of
water and other solvents do not come to rest on, but rather roll or slide off of
horizontal surfaces or alternatively spontaneously spread on. The use of both
topographical and chemical control to prepare these surfaces will be discussed.
A new general method for converting hydrophobic surfaces to hydrophilic ones
that involves polymer adsorption will also be discussed.
