Abstract: Hydrogels are a fascinating group of materials that have found applications in all areas of our society including various areas of the medical field. Hydrogels can easily be prepared from both synthetic and naturally occurring macromolecules and their medical applications include contact lenses (methacrylate, siloxane), sealants/adhesives (PEG, PVA, fibrin), soft tissue augmentation (hyaluronic acid, collagen, methacrylate), cell and drug delivery (PEG, alginate, chitosan). This presentation will discuss the molecular design of injectable gels and the use of controlled phase separation to dramatically improve some of these smart materials fundamental properties.
